Rossi Reveals Helmet Design Inspiration Sources for Mugello 2017

The Yamaha Movistar rider, Valentino Rossi, continued the tradition of wearing a special edition helmet during the race at the Mugello Circuit. For MotoGP Italia 2017, Italian rider took a big theme of football.

This year's helmet I dedicate to Francesco Totti, who just retired last week, is my childhood idol and one of Italy's greatest athletes in the last 20 years, Rossi told a news conference after the Italian MotoGP qualifying session on Saturday / 6/2017).

Rossi has been showing off a special edition Mugello helmet this year ahead of the third free practice session (FP3) on Saturday (3/6/2017). Green-colored helmet is still designed by famous Italian helmet designer, Aldo Drudi.

At the top of the helmet there is a caricature of Rossi playing football. The Doctor wearing a typical blue-white costume of the Italian national football team numbered back 46 with the right hand holding the skin round as if about to take a penalty kick.

There is also the text ho je faccio er cucchiaio (I'm gonna chip him now) which is the title of Francesco Totti's autobiography book released in 2006. The title refers to the technique of a 'panenka' penalty kick as well as the words Totti pronounces to Teammate before becoming an executioner when Italy underwent a penalty shootout against Holland in the Euro 2000 semi-final.

Meanwhile, on the back side of the helmet is a picture of the Italian flag and the words' Un Capitano ... C'e Solo Un Capitano! (One captain ... There is only one captain!) '. It was Rossi's tribute to Totti who is a former Roma captain and loyal to the Italian capital's club for 26 years as a professional footballer until his retirement at the end of the season.

Rossi claimed to have inspired the design of his new helmet while undergoing recovery after an accident when practicing motocross at the weekend. The idea came when the 38-year-old rider was lying on a mattress while watching television with his friends.

It may be difficult to explain but Totti has done a penalty kick with a panenka technique in the Euro semifinals against Holland. It was Sunday and I was lying on a mattress because it was difficult to move (due to injury) while watching television.then my friend joked by saying 'Next week you Can do the same thing as Totti 'I mean I'm already in the best performance because to kick your panenka you must be in 100 percent condition!  Said Rossi.
Alu, of the many special helmet designs for the race at Mugello, which one is Rossi's favorite? My favorite remains the 2008 edition of the design with a face image. That is the most iconic in my career, Valentino Rossi said.
